Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah is the Leader of the Opposition and Chairman Public Accounts Committee in National Assembly. Previously, he has served as Minister in Federal and Provincial cabinets several times. He is affiliated with Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP).

Role as Leader of the Opposition:

Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, member National Assembly of Pakistan was declared as the Leader of the Opposition National Assembly of Pakistan in June 2013 after securing maximum votes in National Assembly under Rule 39 (3) of Rules of Procedure and conduct of Business in National Assembly.

He is a firm supporter of democracy and strongly promotes dialogue. He believes in the policy of consensus and reconciliation. He is one of the most active and regular members of the Parliament which helped expedite his role of oversight and representation efficiently.

Role as Chairman Public Accounts Committee:

Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, immediately after his election as Chairman of 14th PAC devised a strategy for cleaning up the backlog of the Audit Reports for eight years. In order to eliminate the backlog the PAC constituted three Sub-Committees. The Sub-Committees will clear the backlog for the year 1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2007-08 and 2009-10 while the PAC will examine the current Audit Reports for the year 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13.

About 297 meetings of the 14th PAC and sub-committees were held where approximately 14000 grants/paras have been examined. Four reports for the year 1998-99, 2003-04 & 2007-08 and Report on Monitoring and Implementation Committee for the year 1996-97 have been examined/ finalized and presented in the House on 21-11-2016.

An amount of Rs. 119 billion has been recovered on the direction of PAC till January 2016.

The 14th PAC also included six senators have been included in the composition of PAC on 26-01-2017. The incumbent chairman also took up the issue of strengthening of PAC with Honorable Speaker.

Political background:

Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah is a political veteran and has been actively working for the voice of the deprived segments of society from the platform of Pakistan People’s Party for the last three decades. His life is a manifestation of constant struggle against dictatorship, active politics and public service. He contests election from Sukkur, Sindh (NA-199) where his public service.

Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah started his political journey in Government Islamia Science College, Sukkur as a student. Due to his leadership abilities, he was selected as President Student Union, MAS Law College, Sukkur in 1977 and President Student Union, Islamia Post Graduate College, Sukkur, in 1975 and President Student Union, MAS Arts College, in 1971. He further broadened his leadership role and became active in grass root politics and was twice elected as the Leader of Opposition Municipal Corporation Sukkur, Sindh in 1979 and 1987.

He soon expanded his avenue on provincial level and was elected as a member of Provincial Assembly of Sindh (PPP) in 1988 and held many important portfolios in Provincial Assembly as Minister for Transport, Minister for Information, Minister for Education, Minister for Sport, Minister for Finance and Minister for Planning & Development, Government of Sindh.

Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah became a prominent national figure after joining National Assembly in 1990. He has been elected as member national Assembly ever since (1990, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2008, 2013) and served as Party’s Chief Whip (1990, 1993, 2002) and Deputy Opposition Leader (1997).

He served in Federal Cabinet as Federal Minister for Religious Affairs (2011-2013), Federal Minister for Labour, Manpower and Oversees (2008-2011) and Federal Minister for Education and Religious Affairs (1993). In 2012, Shah became chairman of the parliamentary committee on appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and members of Election Commission of Pakistan. He was also the Chairman Sub- Committee on Regularization of Sacked Employees in 2014.

Presently, he is the Chairman of the board of governors of Sukkur Blood Bank Hospital and patron-in-chief of Sindh Hockey Association (SHA) women’s wing. He is also one of the founding members of many educational institutes in Sukkur and continues to support them.

Personal Information:

Shah was born on 20 April 1952 in Sukkur. He received his master's degree in law in 1978 from MAS Law College, Sukkur. He currently resides in Sukkur with his family.
