LIBRARY OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

INTRODUCTION

The National Assembly Library is one of the most modern libraries of the country located on the main floor of the Parliament House.  It has been equipped to deal with the requirements of the national parliament and is primarily meant for the use of the members and officers of the National Assembly.  The Library provides references and documentation services to the parliamentary leadership, house members and standing committees in addition to assist the Senators within its premises. Under Rule 208 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly 2007, the Deputy Speaker is the Chairman of the House and Library Committee and he preside over the affairs pertaining to the library.

The Assembly library has a collection of some 85,000 volumes of books, debates of the National
Assembly of Pakistan and foreign parliaments, reports of the Federal Government and the United
Nations, Gazettes of Pakistan and other documents, including periodicals and publications brought out by the Assembly Secretariat and/or Ministries of the Government of Pakistan. However, the debates of foreign parliaments which are available in the library include:

1. The British House of Commons (in microprint) from 1066 onwards
2. The Indian Legislative Assembly from 1921 to 1947
3. The (Indian) Council of State from 1921 to 1946
4. The Indian Lok Sabha from 1947 to 1976
5. The Indian Rajiya Sabha from 1947 to 1976
6. The US House of Representatives (in microfiche) from 1985 onwards
7. The US Senate (in microfiche) from 1985 onwards

Law journals, Pakistan Legal Decisions (PLD), Supreme Court Monthly Review (SCMR), Civil Law Cases (CLC), Monthly Law Digest (MLD), National Law Reports (NLR), All India Reporter (AIR), Tribunal Decisions (TD) and Pakistan Labour Cases (PLC) and collection of Presidential Orders, Ordinances/Acts/MLR/Chief Executive Orders are also available from 1947 onwards.

The library subscribes to 90 national and foreign newspapers and journals, on a regular basis, for use by the members. Moreover, the National Assembly library has also subscribed the Higher Education Commission digital library and members may like to avail this depository of online books through E-Link.

The facility of Wifi / Internet is also available for the use of members in the Library's Reading Room. The collection available in the Library has been cataloged and interested readers can access this catalogue through internet.

Moreover, Research Scholars/students are allowed access to the archives of Parliamentary Proceedings and publications subject to certain security formalities and at least fifteen days are required to process such requests along with verification of credential of interested students/scholars from head of departments/universities.
