Islamabad, 26th August 2026: The Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR) of the National Assembly has expressed profound grief and strongly condemned the tragic loss of newborn infants in a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad.

 

The Caucus expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and called for a transparent, impartial and thorough investigation to establish the facts and ensure that every individual found responsible or complicit is brought to justice in accordance with the law.

 

The Caucus emphasised that the investigation must comprehensively examine the circumstances leading to the fire, the safety arrangements at the facility, the emergency response and the role of all relevant individuals and authorities, so that any negligence or lapse is identified and accountability is ensured.

 

Convenor of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights, Dr. Nikhat Shakeel, MNA, extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the parents who have suffered the devastating loss of their newborn children.

 

The Caucus stressed that the safety and protection of children, particularly newborns and other vulnerable children under institutional care, is a fundamental responsibility and called for effective enforcement of safety standards, stronger emergency preparedness and greater institutional accountability to prevent such tragedies in the future.

 

The Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety and welfare of children and to supporting legislative, institutional and policy measures aimed at ensuring their protection and fundamental rights.
