Research Wing

Mission Statement

To provide non partisan, relevant and authoritative research support to assist legislators in fulfilling their individual Parliamentary functions in addition to extend assistance to various House Committees, External Affairs and Inter Parliamentary Relations in line with their Parliamentary duties and perform a knowledge management role by organizing and re- purposing information materials generated through all available open sources.

Aims and Objectives

Research Wing is a non-partisan section of the National Assembly Secretariat. Established in 1988, it firmly adheres to the values of confidentiality and commitment. It is vigorously involved in supporting the National Legislature by developing creative approach towards legislative needs and responding to specific requests from legislators in a timely manner. The Wing has academically qualified and experienced Research Officers, who undertake timely substantive analytical research in non-partisan way.

Research Services

The Research Wing provides research papers, backgrounders, position papers, research briefs, fact sheets, comparative studies, statements, talking points, speeches etc on wide-ranging subjects to Honourable Speaker National Assembly, Deputy Speaker, Leader of the House, Leader of the Opposition, Members of the National Assembly and Secretary National Assembly. However, a significant proportion of research services cater for the needs of National Assembly delegations going to other countries on good-will visits or for participating in International Parliamentary Conferences/Seminars and during bilateral engagements.

Four Specialized Desks are permanently working to provide expert analysis and information to the honourable Members. The desks cover the following research areas namely: 1) International Relations 2) Economic Affairs 3) Constitutional & Parliamentary Affairs and 4) Social & Political Developments.

The Wing also provides Technical Support to Standing Committees in terms of providing specialized research on agenda items of public importance. For this purpose, the National Assembly Standing Committees have been distributed amongst the Research team and input is forwarded to the concerned committee on request basis. Apart from preparing legislative briefs on Bills dealing with very important issues, the wing also prepares Budget Information Jacket every year covering the different aspects of the budget thereby assisting Honourable Members in better analyzing and reviewing the budget documents.

The Research Wing has also established Parliamentary Research Repository/Data Bank containing important national/international issues sifted from web. Moreover, the Research Wing also monitors newspapers and journals to maintain easily retrievable Digital Databank of Press Clippings for immediate reference retrieval.
