LIBRARY OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

INTRODUCTION

The National Assembly Library is one of the most well equipped libraries of the country situated on the second floor of the Parliament House. It has been equipped to deal with the requirements of the parliament. National Assembly Library is primarily meant for the use of the Members and Officers of the National Assembly. The Library provides references and services to the House and Standing Committees. This Library also provides assistance to the Senators, within the library premises.

This Library has a collection of about 80,000 volumes of books, including National Assembly debates, House of Commons debates (England) from 1066 till 1990 A.D, the Indian Legislative Assembly debates 1921-47, the Council of State of India debates 1921-46, Lok Sabha and Rajiya Sabha of India till 1947-76, Gazette of Pakistan (1947 todate), reports of Federal Government, United Nations and its agencies, and other documents. Number of law journals are also available in the Library namely, Pakistan Legal Decisions (PLD), Supreme Court Monthly Review (SCMR), Civil Law Cases (CLC), Monthly Law Digest (MLD), National Law Reports (NLR) and All India Reporter (AIR). Library has exchange relations with some other parliaments and receives parliamentary documents from them. Beside this the collection of Ordinances /Acts/MLR/C.E. Orders are also available from 1947- to date.

The debates of the National Assembly are available in the form of Microfilm 1947 to 1999. The House of Representatives & the Senate of the United States 1985-2000 are also available on the Microfilm. The Members can access this facility in the National Assembly Library.

In the Library the facility of Internet is also available for the honourable Members.

Recently the National Assembly library has subscribed the facility of Higher Education Commission digital library and Members can also avail this huge depository of online books through this website http://www.digitallibrary.edu.pk/nat_assem_sec.html.

The collection available in the Library has been cataloged through library Management System Software and is available on the local Area Network of the Assembly for online access to the Members. This catalog will be made available on the website of the National Assembly very soon.

Under Rule 208 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, in the National Assembly 2007, a Committee on House and Library has been constituted with Deputy Speaker National Assembly as Chairman to provide guidance for the improvement of facilities in the National Assembly Library.

RARE DOCUMENTS

The library has some very rare collections regarding constitutional, legislative and political history of Pakistan. In order to preserve this national heritage, a number of rare documents from this historic archive have been scanned and converted into digitalized format.
