"Turkey and Bahrain; Time-Tested Friends of Pakistan": says NA Speaker Assures Support for Paksitan's Candidate for IPU Secretary Generalship

Islamabad: March 19, 2014; Speaker, National Assembly of Pakistan, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has met with H.E. Cemil Cicek, Speaker of Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Mr. Jamal Fakhro, Deputy Speaker of Shura Council of Kingdom of Bahrain on the sidelines of the 130th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly meeting in Geneva, according to a message received from Switzerland.



Talking to the Turkish counterpart, the Speaker said that that friendship between the two brotherly countries is time tested and has roots in history. This fact cannot be denied that Turkey has always been a friend in need and stood by Pakistan in difficult times. The Speaker underlined the need for enhanced interaction between the parliamentarians of both the countries for further cementing the fraternal relations between the two countries. He said that parliamentarians of the two sides could play a meaningful role in the region as “parliamentary diplomacy could enable the real policy makers to understand each-others’ points of view, better. “Turkey role in October 2005 Earthquake in AJK and KPK was commendable and would always be remembered”, he added.

Mr. Cemil Cicek assured Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of his country’s continued and unflinching support to Pakistan in diverse fields. He termed the friendship between his country and Pakistan, “a historic association that was deeply imbedded in the hearts and minds of the people of both the countries”. He also recalled that Turkey had always endorsed Pakistan’s initiatives, such as the forming of the PAECO and in the same spirit would also support the candidature of Ms. Shazia Rafi. He assured that Turkey would seek the support of other countries as well. He also requested Pakistan that in its capacity as a Member of the IPU, it should help Turkey in getting the observer status for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Ms. Sibel Siber Speaker of the Turkish Cyprus was also present during the meeting.

Later, talking to the Deputy Speaker of the Bahrain Legislature, the Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that Pakistan and Bahrain enjoy close and cordial relations based on mutual trust and understanding. He said that interaction between parliamentarians of both the countries could add substance to the existing relations besides providing opportunities for exchanging views and sharing experiences. The Speaker admired the recent visit of King of Bahrain His Majesty Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Pakistan which reflects rejuvenating relations between two brotherly countries.

By reciprocating the support for the Pakistan’s Candidate for Secretary Generalship of IPU, Ms. Shazia Rafi; the Deputy Speaker of Bahrain assured that Bahrain would support Pakistan’s candidate. He also extended an invitation to visit Bahrain on behalf of the Speaker of Bahrain.
