NA Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication (M/o IT&T) met today

Islamabad, 11th July 2017: The 27th meeting of the Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication (M/o IT&T) was held under the Chairmanship of Captain (Retd.) Muhammad Safdar, MNA.

2.      The meeting was started with the recitation from the Holy Quran. Then, the Committee decided to proceed with the given agenda.

3.     Agenda item i.

        The Committee unanimously confirmed the minutes of its last meeting held on 09th May, 2017.

4.     Agenda item ii.

          The representative from Universal Services Fund (USF) gave detail briefing on USF ongoing and future projects along-with completion date and fund utilization up to 30th June, 2018. He also explained the year-wise receipts and expenditure position as of June 30, 2017 approximately 36,877,965,355 Billion. USF also briefed the programs to utilize the fund for its intended purpose. In this regards they have been designed the programmes to cater for the needs of unserved and underserved segment of population across Pakistan. USF also intends to provide coverage to the unserved areas in FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, headed. Further more USF is also gathering data from telecom operators regarding their existing coverage in the country and also design projects to upgrade existing infrastructure to provide 3G services.

5.      Agenda item iii.

          The representative from Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) informed the committee that PTA had already established a web analysis cell where 25 personnel are working solely on identifying unlawful content on internet including the blasphemous. In this regard, PTA blocked 12,977 URLs Blasphemous URLs and more than 6000 complaints were reviewed and processed accordingly. Facebook has also designated focal person to coordinate with PTA for prompt action against the reported material. Facebook reiterated their commitment toward removal/blocking of the blasphemous and objectionable content and assured that they will improve the cooperation and response time. The Committee expressed displeasure over the absence of DG, FIA in the meeting and decided to take serious action, in this regard.

 6.     The Hon. MNAs/Member Mian Muhammad Farooq, Mehar Ishtiaq Ahmad, Ms. Farhana Qamar, Ms. Shazia Mubashar Ms. Zahra Wadood Fatemi, Ms. Shazia Sohail Mir, Nouman Islam Shaikh, Amjid Ali Khan, Syed Ali Raza Abidi and Ch. Muhammad Tufail attended the meeting. The senior officers from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Federal Investigation Authority were also attended the meeting.
