Pakistan – Afghanistan Parliamentary Friendship Group met today

Thursday, 20th October, 2016

The Pakistan – Afghanistan Friendship Group in the National Assembly of Pakistan (PFG) met under its Convener Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, MNA on Thursday, October 20, 2016.

The PFG expressed great concern over the deterioration of Pakistan – Afghanistan relations and reiterated its position that it is in the interests of the people and the governments of both nations that we build a strong and stable relationship. The governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan must take effective steps to address the misgivings of both sides as this is the only way to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity in our region.

The PFG stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy which has played an important role in improving Pakistan – Afghanistan ties. In calling for greater parliamentary exchanges between both countries, the PFG recommends that parliamentary exchanges be extended to include the Provinces by creating similar Friendship Groups in the Provincial Assemblies. For this purpose, letters have already been issued to the Speakers of the Provincial Assemblies.

On the issue of the repatriation of Afghan refugees, the PFG stressed the need for the repatriation process to be honorable and humane and asserted that the Afghan refugees should not be subjected to harassment during this process.
