Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly has established a relief fund named as a "Speaker's Relief Fund" to support the Flood Effected people in the country.

She has asked the Parliamentarians and Staff of the National Assembly to donate in the Speaker's Relief Fund. The Madam Speaker has asked MNAs to actively participate for raising fund for the displaced people. She also called upon the general public to contribute in the fund.

ACTING PRESIDENT APPEALS TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, PHILANTHROPISTS AND AFFLUENTS TO HELP THE IDPs

Islamabad May 13, 2009: The Acting President Dr. Fehmida Mirza has said that Pakistan faced the challenges of millions of Internally Displaced People in Swat and it was the responsibility of the World as well local community to assist the government for the rehabilitation of the IDPs. The Acting President expressed these views while talking to Media on conclusion of her visit to Sheikh Shehzad Camp established for IDPs in Mardan (NWFP). Members of the National Assembly oversight committee for Releaf also accompanied the Acting President during her visit.

Speaking on the occasion, the Acting President said that the government was committed to provide relief and rehabilitation of the displaced persons and would take all possible measures in that regard. She said that the country was facing the menace of terrorism and extremism and make all possible measures to establish the writ of the government. She said that she and the parliamentarians have visited the IDPs to express solidarity with them and to assure them that they were not alone in the time of distress.

The Acting President said that the Parliamentarians were committed to resolve the problems confronting the people and specifically during the time of national emergency and crisis. She said that Parliamentarians have always set precedence of service to the nation in crisis. She said parliamentarians have generously donated money to the National Assembly constituted Speakers Relief Fund for the displaced people of the tribal areas. The Acting President said that the funds will be utilized for the IDPs from Swat and Malakand. She urged the civil society, philanthropists, NGO and parliamentarians the world over to contribute and donate into the fund for the welfare of the IDPs from Swat and adjoining areas.

The Acting President asked the Media to highlight the problems of the IDPs residing in camps and the generosity of the people who help them. She asked the affluent class to bear the expenditures of orphans and other deserving families as a good will gesture. The Acting President announced to bear the expenditure of the upbringing of the newly born girl child named Amn and her mother as long as they were in the IDPs camp at Swabi and till their rehabilitation.

The Acting President later on delivered 16 trucks of relief goods to the displaced people of Swat and Malakand which included included eatables, clothes, medicines, fans, desert coolers sewing machines and water filters. She appreciated the relief work carried out by armed forces, civil administration, people of Mardan, NGOs, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and welfare organizations.
